Mapping of coniferous lime forests

Mapping of coniferous lime forests (see definitions and differentiating species). The mapping was made in northern Uppland coastal areas from Älvkarleby to Gräsö on mission by the Swedish Forest Agency in Mälardalen and the County Administrative board in Uppland. What have been interpreted though are herb rich coniferous forests in lime rich areas. Coniferous lime forests cannot be separated from herb rich coniferous forests in the infra red colour photos. In another project (financed by the County Administrative Boars in Stockholm) coniferous lime forests and coniferous sandy forests within Norrtälje were mapped. “In relation to the Swedish Forest Agency’s concentrated work on mapping key habitats, a perspicuous interpreting material of stands worth visiting, is needed for the field season 2003. Because herb rich coniferous forests (coniferous lime forests) regionally are very important key habitats, but needs extensive interpreting knowledge and experience to be found in aerial photos, this project has been suggested to be given to a professional company with great knowledge in vegetation interpreting”. (From the mission directory) A preliminary investigation has shown a very high level of accuracy in the interpretation.
  Red lines outline mapped herb rich forests. Green surfaces are key objects. Green lines marks areas under investigation for possible reserve status. Within these herb rich coniferous forests wasn’t supposed to be interpreted. The background photo is the panchromatic layer in the Landsatscen from June 2001. The methodology is described here. An analysis of over aged herb rich forests and coniferous sandy forests has been performed in the vegetation map data base of Västmanland County on mission by the County Administrative Board. Statistics are shown below and an overview of the results (north-east part of the county) is shown here.
